Upton St Leonards Church of England (Controlled) Primary School is set in a village environment and serves a wide community including Upton St Leonards Village, Abbeymead and further surrounding areas.
There are currently 420 children on roll. The school is organised in seven separate year groups with six infant and eight junior classes.
As a Church of England (controlled) School, we support and promote Christian beliefs and values, not only through worship, but also through everyday life. Our school vision of ‘Building foundations for a love of life, a love of learning and a love of one another’ is central to all that we do. The four core values of; love, perseverance, respect and truthfulness underpin this.
Learning is the fundamental purpose of the school. At Upton St Leonards C of E Primary School, we believe that high quality teaching leads to effective learning and therefore that is what we strive for in every lesson. We have high aspirations for our children and our staff. As a result, children are provided with high quality learning experiences, resulting in a high level of pupil achievement across all areas of the curriculum.
As a school, we are committed to using academic research to inform our decision making. Education is ever-changing, as we learn more about how children learn and the best practices for teaching and learning.
We are very proud to be recognised as an ‘Embracing Thrive’ school and to have achieved our ‘GHLL Mental Health Award’. We place a great deal of emphasis on 'relationships' with one another, prioritising the need to increase children’s self-esteem and confidence. We therefore adopt a positive approach to behaviour through a carefully structured system of rewards, using a restorative approach to managing misbehaviour. In doing so, staff recognise and attune to pupils' emotions, validate them and help them to self-regulate. Rewards, such as House Points, are given not only for academic effort or achievement, but also for contributions towards the school ethos and values, for example acts of compassion and generosity.
The voice of our pupils is incredibly important to us. We have a well-established School Council, an Eco Club, Digital Leaders and School Captains, Vice-Captains and Sport Captains. These provide the opportunity for pupils to have some influence and say in areas of school life.
Music is a strength of the school. We have school choirs, several 'Rock Steady' bands, have ukalele lessons and take part in ‘ising Pop’ and Young Voices Concerts. We also have peripatetic teachers in school who provide tuition in violin, woodwind, piano, drumming and guitar.
Upton St Leonard’s C of E Primary School has an enthusiastic and committed team of teaching and support staff who work hard for the school. Each member of the teaching staff has curricular responsibilities, and parents and governors are kept abreast of curricular developments through formal and informal contacts. We have a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including sporting, chess, music and gardening clubs.
Our school buildings are modern and well-resourced. In addition to the classrooms and practical areas, we have a spacious well-equipped hall, a Thrive/ Nurture room (‘The Hub’), teaching kitchen, intervention room, Music/ Meeting Room, Hygeine Suite and a Library.
Outside we have a large playground, two fields, an adventure playground, Mud Kitchen, Spiritual Garden, Outdoor Stage, a Forest School area and a Wildlife Area with pond.
At Upton St Leonards, we recognise that education involves children, parents, staff, governors and the wider community and that for optimum benefit, all should work closely together to support the process of learning.
We look forward to the prospect of working with you to realise your child's full potential whilst loving 'learning, life and each other'.
