Enrichment Opportunities at Upton St Leonards
As well as a full and varied curriculum, we offer our pupils many opportunities to participate in exciting projects and experiences.
Worships
As a church school, we have collective worship every day. Most of our worships revolve around a Christian theme from our value of the half-term or one of our four core values: Love, Persevreance, truthfulness and Respect. We read stories from the Bible and teach children to follow the way Jesus would have wanted us to live. Once or twice a week, we explore other areas of life. We regularly have visitors in school to talk to the children about a range of topics.
In 23-2024, we have already had visits from:
We also have reading worships once a week. Some of the stories we read in these worships are linked to key events and dates in the calendar. These are planned out at the start of the academic year as you can see below.
Church Visits
Our children attend and lead worships and services at the Local St Leonards Church both at Easter and Christmas time. During these services, they retell the stories from The Bible, sing together and celebrate these important Christian events.
We also have Open the Book and our church vicar (Rev Helen) attend school on a regular basis to share bible stories.
Gloucester Schools' Mock Trial Competition
Each year a group of Year 5 and 6 children are invited to take part in a Gloucester Schools Mock Trial competition. Children take on the roles of either a prosecution or defence team and try to argue their way to victory against another school.
Young Voices
We are proud to offer our Key Stage 2 children the opportunity to represent Upton St Leonards at the annual Young Voices concert held at the NIA in Birmingham. This huge and exciting event gives the children the chance to sing as part of a huge 5000 strong choir made up from children from other schools. They sing and perform with well known artists from the worlds of music and dance in this unrivalled event.
Singing at Gloucester Cathedral
Our choir also have the chance to attend many other exciting events. One of these is the prestigious carol concert held every December at Gloucester Cathedral.
Year 5 Shakespeare Performance
Our Year 5 children are given the opportunity to learn a scene from a famous Shakespeare play and join other schools in putting on a fantastic performance. This annual event is held at a local secondary school and is open to Parents and Carers of all those involved to come along and watch.
