Reading Overview

Reading Overview

At Upton, our reading curriculum has been put together with children's moral and cultural development as a central focus. We recognise that we are a predominantly white, British school and therefore, we have a duty to teach our children about life in Britain beyond Upton St Leonards. We read stories and novels that cover many different aspects of life and teach children various values and morals such as developing empathy for others.

Our reading curriculum follows a windows, mirrors and doors approach.

Windows - some novels and stories are selected so that children can see into other people's lives and see the world from a different viewpoint.
Mirrors - some novels and stories are selected so that children can see themselves in the characters or plot.
Doors - some novels and stories are selected so that children can open doors and be taken into new worlds.

Please see the reading overview using the link below. We reserve the right to change the books being used annually to ensure our reading offer is always the very best it can be.
